There are all kinds of love in this world but never the same love twice.

H came home a couple months ago asking if she could make a “galaxy jar” with the same starry-eyed grin she gets when she asks if we can make putty, ooblek, bath bombs or “kitchen experiments”. So, I had a hunch the process was going to lead to some artsy (possibly messy) fun. I was really hoping the fun wasn’t going to require running to the store for a random mystery ingredient or call for a material that was going to turn into polymer and never leave the earth (looking at you slime).
In a happy twist of fate we had every material on hand. Okaay.. you might be thinking.. mini glass potion bottles are an everyday staple at your place? Did I mention that we do a lot of fairy, unicorn, and mermaid parties?
If Galaxy/Nebula jars are the new fun process-y potion craze.. count me in! You can absolutely go big and use a mason jar or one of these for your love potions but we wanted to create minis to use as this year’s candy-free class valentine.
If you are short on time but you like the idea of a love potion valentine we made an illustrated & ready to print option too. You can check out the Love Potion Printable pack here. If you are still on the hunt for Valentine options check out our gem heart printable pack or our you make life colorful printable.

We used water and acrylic craft paint to create our potion colors but I think that diluted tempera would work too!
Once you have created your diluted paint colors you will start separating your cotton balls a bit. Think fluff not ball for these minis. Push a section of your cotton fluff all the way down to the base of your bottle. Next, you will add your first layer of color and a sprinkle of eco glitter. Take the back of your brush and push these first layers down in preparation for you next layer of color and sparkle. It might be helpful to hum this tune: fluff, paint, sprinkle, fluff, push…fluff, paint, sprinkle, fluff push. Repeat the layering process until you reach the top. The idea is to get the swirly painty nebula effect while the liquid is contained in the cotton fluff. You will notice as you layer and pack your bottle that you go through a lot of fluff. Can you imagine how many cotton balls you are going to need if/when you make a bigger version?!
Aren’t they magical?
We added a little heart bead to the top of the cork!
Decorate the front of your potion bottles with sweet little hearts….
