Hand Painted Gift Wrap + Wooden Topper
"The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away."
- Joy J. Golliver
You know when someone gives you a gift and it is so pretty that you don't even want to tear into it? Doesn't that make you feel special? To know that someone took enough time and care to make sure that the outsides were just as wonderful as the gift inside. I love that! Today I am going to show you how to make this pretty little package that is quite literally a work of art! This one is totally kid-friendly. My girls LOVE making their own wrapping paper.
Materials:
acrylic paint - I used a matte sage green mixed with a little white, black and copper straight out of the tube
duct tape or painters tape for masking

1. Lay out your paper roll on a flat surface. Weigh down your edges so the paper doesn't roll up on you while you are painting.
2. Gather a couple of brush sizes and your paint palette and create your abstract pattern. I did one section with short choppy brush strokes and the other section with loose, fluid lines. This took me all of 3 minutes. Acrylic on paper dries very quickly. I didn't use a lot of paint and I painted with a dry brush so my dry time was about half an hour.
Whenever I go to Michael's I have to check out the wooden craft section. You can find some really wonderful things there, usually at bargain prices, and the inventory changes often so you never know what special thing will jump into your basket. A month ago I bought these two little wooden hearts for under $1. I have been holding onto them for just the right occasion. I really love the idea of a gift topper that can then be used as an ornament! If you don't feel like running to the store to buy a wooden heart, you could use what you have at home.. card stock or cardboard would work wonderfully here.
3. Use painters tape or duct tape to mask your design. I cut a thin strip of duct tape and masked off a simple geometric snow-scape.
I had two hearts so I decided to mask the other one in a simple geo pattern. I painted my trees a pale sage green and painted the snow in my foreground white. Black paint for the geo pattern.
4. Let your paint dry fully before you peel off your tape.
5. Thread your beads on a natural fiber thread, knotting above and below your beads to keep them in place. I left a little room below my bottom knot (see image top right) so that I could hot glue my loop onto the back of my heart.
6. By now your paper should be dry and you can start to wrap. I really like using double-sided sticky tape so that the tape is hidden beneath the wrap.
6. Tie your package with a satin ribbon and top it with your hand painted ornament.
That's a wrap!
xx
