It’s not possible to present an accurate picture of our culture without all the voices of the people in the culture. So at the emerging level, you can’t have a good art show without women and artists of color.

    – Frida Kahlo

For the past 3 years I have taken to my Instagram feed during the first week of March to celebrate women artists. Each year my approach has been slightly different but the goal has always been the same: EXPOSE WOMEN ARTISTS. I want the names, lives and work of women artists to be as appreciated, widely known and respected as their male counterparts. It is not enough to wish that this equality and reverence would simply be - I have to be a part of the change. I also have to consistently seek out and share the work of woman artists of color. It is so important that the stories and images we are sharing with young people are diverse. These early experiences shape their perception of the world. A world that should be viewed through a broad lens not a micro, singular lens. Let’s all vow to make our collective art tables, toy boxes, and book shelves reflect the range of human experience - all genders, all skin tones, all ethnicities, and perspectives. I am already thinking about ways I can do a better job of consistently representing a more diverse art view on this site. I hope these projects inspire you to do the same.

I also wanted to celebrate the work of my art history loving peers in the kids art community on Instagram. So this year I decided to also broaden my approach to women’s week by launching the first annual ART CAMP women’s week collective. The result of this team effort is a dynamic body of women artist studies + some really fun projects. Enjoy xx
